Our Story

CCanadian communities are already feeling the effects of climate change, from record heat waves and wildfire smoke to rising flood risks and growing food insecurity. These impacts are not equal. Where you live, who you're connected to, and what resources your community can access all shape how much you're exposed and how much support you have when things get hard.

Sprout (formerly Climate Resilient Communities) is a volunteer-run organization made up of people from technology, climate, and community backgrounds who believe that the people closest to these challenges are also closest to the solutions. We work alongside urban Canadian communities and grassroots organizations, providing data tools, local insights, and storytelling support that reflects what's actually happening on the ground.

We build on existing community strengths and amplify work already underway, including organizing around urban heat, flood preparedness, food access, climate anxiety, and the countless local efforts that rarely make the news but hold communities together and keep people safe.

Our work is currently based in Toronto, with plans to expand to other urban communities across Canada.

Our Vision

Communities using their local knowledge, data, voices and actions to co-create the resilient future they want to see; healthier, stronger, better-connected, and ready for whatever climate change brings, now and for generations to come.

Our Mission

Sprout helps communities bounce forward, not just bounce back. We use data storytelling, citizen science and climate expertise to amplify the resilience work already happening in neighbourhoods, helping people advocate for what they need and imagine solutions that go beyond just surviving to actually thriving.

We work where community knowledge, data, and climate action meet. Our job isn't to be the experts with all the answers, it's to help communities tell their stories with data, mobilize their collective actions, and create connections across the groups and sectors that are often siloed.

What We Do

We support community-led resilience work by offering:

๐Ÿ“Š Data services: Working alongside community and climate organizations to collect, analyze, and visualize data that makes local challenges visible and actionable โ€” from heat and flooding to food insecurity.

๐Ÿ“š Learning programs: Building confidence with data and climate knowledge โ€” for frontline workers, organizations, youth, and newcomers.

๐Ÿ˜๏ธ Community connection and Knowledge Sharing: Creating spaces and tools for the people doing this work to find each other, share what's working, and build together.

๐ŸŒฑ Climate Anxiety Research: Developing a climate anxiety taxonomy โ€” a framework for understanding, naming, and advocating around the mental health dimensions of climate change

Formerly Climate Resilient Communities

In March 2026, we rebranded from Climate Resilient Communities to Sprout. If youโ€™ve known us by our former name, youโ€™re not wrong โ€” weโ€™re still the same team, doing the same work, with the same mission.

We made this change to reflect our growing identity as a connector, builder, and supporter of grassroots. The name Sprout speaks to growth, local roots, and the power of small beginnings to create lasting change โ€“ also, itโ€™s just a lot less syllables.
